October 9, 2024

Willie Buchanon (Class of 1968) and OHS Hall of Fame in 2006, who starred at OHS, MiraCosta College and was an All-American defensive back at San Diego State is among 20 players and five coaches who have the honor of being inducted into this year’s California High School Football Hall of Fame.  The criteria for induction include a player’s complete body of work—high school, college and pro. Buchanon played for Herb Meyer at OHS.  He was a first-round draft pick of the Green Bay Packers in 972 after playing for Don Coryell at SDSU.  He was named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1978, he led the league with nine interceptions, including a league-tying record four against the San Diego Chargers.  Willie spent the last four years of his career with the Chargers.  In retirement, he has been inducted into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame, the San Diego State Hall of Fame, the San Diego Hall of Champions, the Junior College Hall of Fame and of course, the OHS Foundation Hall of Fame!

Congratulations Willie Buchanon, we are proud of you!
